Shoulder Muscle Pain
Shoulder muscle pain can be a real nuisance. It never comes at a convenient time. It prevents you from doing the things you want or have to do. You tend to avoid using your shoulder muscles when you have this pain, and that either brings you behind on your schedule, or you will just decide not to do the work. To get a better understanding of the cause of the pain, it is important that you learn a little more about shoulder muscle anatomy. There could be a lot of different reasons why you are dealing with that pain.
Your shoulder is more than one bone and one muscle. The one thing a doctor does before starting shoulder muscle pain treatment, is deciding where exactly the pain originates. Sometimes x-rays are necessary to pinpoint where the pain comes from. After all, shoulder back muscle pain and shoulder blade muscle pain are treated differently. And do not forget that neck shoulder muscle pain can have a very different underlying cause, especially if it is on the left side. Do not underestimate the possible consequences if you decide not to find professional treatment for the problem. Always talk to a doctor or a healthcare professional who has studied these things. Pains in that area of the body could also indicate that you are having a back issue. Sometimes it can be enough just to learn how to lift stuff right. Spinal cord deviations and other issues and injuries that are minor can also make your shoulder hurt. A visit to a licensed chiropractor can do wonders.
Do not start any real treatment on your own. But sometimes some common sense can be very helpful. Did you drive around lately, and the burning sun on your shoulder made the pain go away? Try a heating pad. Pharmacies sell those that you can put in the microwave. Follow the instructions very carefully. You do not want to end up with burns. Those heating pads that have rice in it are especially popular. They stay warm for a very long time. A nice long warm shower or bath can help also. Some people swear that ice always helps with muscle pain, regardless of where in your body you are hurting. Be very careful with that. If ice usually helps for you when for instance your knee hurts, and you are not convinced that you want to see a doctor for this yet, try it. But if you suddenly feel that your muscle is stiffening up or your pain increases, remove the ice bag immediately. Do not take any risks. You do not transform a simple shoulder pain into a serious injury.
Over the counter pain medication can help ease your shoulder muscle pain. If you are sure that it really is just a muscle pain and nothing else, talk to your pharmacist and follow his advice. Always keep in mind that most over the counter medications can only be used for a limited time period. Returning pain can entice you to take the medication too often. Most over the counter medications do have potential side effects. Deciding to take over the counter medication on your own can also be dangerous. What if it just masks the underlying symptoms and by taking the pain meds you will discover a lot later what is really wrong with you. Do not forget that if the pain meds that you have in your medicine cabinet or the hot or cold packs help, you are only addressing the pain, and not what is in fact causing the pain. Do you really want to lose precious time, and suffer from symptoms that keep coming back? Going to a doctor the same day could solve your problem a lot faster.
Trying to deal with the pain on your own could also encourage you to slow down and rest. Not everybody will be helped by resting and putting a shoulder on non-active. It could very well be that it is not a muscle that is hurting. Some of these conditions can only be fixed by moving and using your shoulder more. Inactivity can make you feel stiffer. Without going to a doctor it is almost impossible to find out if you should get more active or, on the other hand, should rest more. This pain could very well be related to your age. Arthritis is just one of the illnesses of old age that could cause pain like that. If Arthritis is the cause of your shoulder pain, you need to know that. The doctor can give you a prescription for medications that slow down those conditions that come with old age. Keep moving is the message when you have age related stiffness. Once you give in to it, you will age even faster and the pain will increase.
Once the doctor determines the cause of your pain, he can start treatment. That could very well include pain medication. The medication that is prescribed by a doctor is usually more effective and thus stronger. Instead of taking four pills every so many hours, you could be ok taking just one pill. Never forget that shoulder muscle pain is not the worst thing that can happen to you, and in most cases there is a remedy.
